3101 | Woody Guthrie: His Life and His Songs, an awe-inspiring ten-frame (160-page) exhibition collection, divided into six parts, tracing the life, times and music of one of America's greatest 20th century balladeers. Part I of the exhibit, "Way Down Yonder", begins with his childhood in Oklahoma, the origins of his name (Woodrow Wilson Guthrie), his musical roots, the disintegration of his family, and his years in Texas. Part II, "From California to the New York Island", follows Guthrie in Los Angeles, New York City, "Roaming and Rambling", the evolution of his political views and his Union songs, finding him at the end in the Pacific Northwest. Part III, "A Child to Fight", looks at Guthrie as a partisan songster, his service in the Merchant Marines and Army, and at his life after the war. Part IV, "Bound for Glory", focuses on Guthrie's musical and family lives, with sections "A Living Legend", "Creative Artist", "Marriage and Fatherhood", "Religion" and "Tragic Fires". Part V, "The Crazeldy Nightmare", covers Guthrie's diagnosis with Huntington's Disease and his slow decline and death. Part VI, "Epilogue", highlights the Woody Guthrie stamp issued in 1998. Covers come from his numerous hometowns (including a "From: Woody Guthrie" manuscript return address in New York City), towns bearing his names or those of his family, towns relating to his numerous songs, even an Arlo Guthrie item or two, and a $10 bill from the Okemah National Bank where his father briefly worked. Their work (included) a nursery outside Mississauga, a variety of farms as day labourers, harvesting sugar beets near Glencoe, building roads in Northern Ontario (and) landscaping in public parks. There are few stories of rebellion and resistance by Japanese workers, but here's one: "At one Niagara farm, Dick Ujiye, who had owned a dry cleaning business in Vancouver, was assigned to drive the fertilizer wagon. He decided that he was no farmer and talked with other Japanese Canadians about moving to the city. The conditions of the Japanese deportation from the B.C. coast, however, prohibited such a move. The RCMP sent an officer who spoke Japanese to check up on the Ujiye family because "they claimed that Dick was an agitator." The policeman reported Ujiye to the farm owner and he was fired. - Carmela Patrias, More Menial than Housemaids?
