A matching Valentine cover addressed in the same hand to a different address and with the same handstamp markings was offered in the Siegel's Kuphal sale (Sale 925, Lot 1494A). It appears on that cover has an gummed toned area in the upper right hand corner in the shape of the Cummings' adhesive (which probably fell off) which lends credence to this usage as being genuine. 337 | Wells Fargo & Co., 1862-64, 10¢ brown, 25¢ blue & 25¢ red. Blocks of 4, no gum, each with full margins on one side and wide sheet margins around, all exceptionally fresh with brilliant colors, Extremely Fine and choice.Scott No. 143L7-143L9; Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.A SUPERB BLOCK OF FOUR SET OF THE WELLS, FARGO & CO. VIRGINIA CITY PONY EXPRESS ISSUES. This was a Private Enterprise of Wells, Fargo & Co. for the rapid handling of letters between San Francisco and the mining region around Virginia City, Nevada. Adhesive stamps were affixed to Wells Fargo franked envelopes which for the extra charge indicated by the stamps, gave rapid service by pony. Letters went from San Francisco to Sacramento by Boat, then by Pony. The service started Aug. 11, 1852 with an extra Pony Charge of 10 cents. This rate was increased in 1863 to 25 cents. The color of the 25 cents was changed from blue to red in 1864 and the service was ended in early 1865. | $2,000 | |

Special Printings of envelopes for the 1876 Centennial Exposition are recognized as being among the rarest of all stamped envelopes. It is believed that due to fineness of the impressions on these issues that it is quite possible that new die where used for these special printings. These mint examples mainly appear to have a Registered Business imprint in the upper left corner. Other examples of this die all appear to have been printed on amber paper with a variety of watermarks and pre-printed formats from at least eight locations.
