551849-O G+ original. The story of the 1849-O quarter is a fabled one. Not listed on any US Mint account, it's mintage (a mere 16,000 coins), is believed to be lumped in with the 1850-O mintage (which is listed at 396,000.) The reason for this is unknown. Even in low grade, the 49-O is a four-figure coin. Our grade for the present coin is Good-6 w/ beautiful surfaces, even wear, and 100% originality. According to the PCGS website, coins in this condition are in the neighborhood of $1,500 attesting to its scarcity. 179 have been graded by PCGS and NGC combined, mostly clustered in the AG3 to VG10 range (only 8 are uncirculated, the best being a lone MS64 by NGC.) This offering presents a rare opportunity for the Seated Quarter specialist.

581873 No Arrows Closed 3 Proof 58 brightened. This coin has the great detail proofs are known for, and although its has been brightened, it does not have the unsightly hairlines so typical of harshly cleaned coins. The mint changed the weight of the quarter from 6.22 grams to 6.25 grams in 1873. To denote the change, arrows were placed at the date. Coins struck that year under the old weight standard do not have the arrows and are typically far scarcer than those with arrows. But the majority of the proofs struck that year are "No Arrows" coins. The present coin can be verified to be a proof by the small die cracks on the rev shield.

831883 Fine but w/ surface imperfections and environmental damage on the rev. By the mid-1870s, the price of silver had fallen low enough to result in millions of previously-hoarded silver coins to flood back to the channels of commerce. This resulted in a virtual cessation of newly-minted quarters and half dollars from 1879 thru 1890. The 1883 half is a scarce one, but with a mintage of 8,000, it is a bit more available than the surrounding issues.
2
$100
841889 Good. Another scarce issue for the 1880s. (See comments for the previous lot.) Compared to all the other surrounding issues, the mintage of the 1889 is a robust 12,000, nonetheless it is seldom offered.
